THE SHATTERED LAND

The Last Five Days

Imagine the greatest secret in human history. A gift from another race…

Here. In England.

A barmaid from Lancashire. A ne’er-do-well from Iowa. Two burger-sellers, brothers, from London. Two physicists, husband and wife, from Cambridge. An ex-Marine from Newcastle. A vicar from Blackpool and his Lady Friend. And many, many others, all caught up in the secret; some of whom have spent years trying to protect it.

But the secret is coming out. And men of power and influence have come to hear of it, and will do anything to lay their hands on it – up to and including going to war.

And somewhere out there, in the darkness and rain of a northern English winter, a wild-card. A maniac, who seeks one thing and one thing only: he wants all of them dead. And he has the will – and the means – to destroy a nation in order to achieve his aim….

The Falling Fire

When the world you know is falling into ruin around you, you have but three choices.

Lay down and die.

Stand and fight.

Or run for your life…

England is on the brink. Thrown back in time and racked by civil war. A tiny group of survivors are trying to make sense of what has gone before, and what may yet be their fate:

Alison McGuire, alone, fearful, and desperate for safety.

Judith Lal, her daughters and their friends, Albert and Ronnie Clamp, eking out life in a refugee camp.

Joe Ackerman and Olivie de Saint Vaulry, trying to find a maniac and stop him - before he kills them.

The quest for safety and freedom will carry them the length of the shattered land, through violence, fear and death, and change them in ways they never thought possible.

And in France, a teenaged girl plays on a computer, unaware that she is a part of it all - and that she may hold the key to an even greater cataclysm to come...

Jerusalem

Britain is in ruins; a fallen, feral society. The south jammed with refugees, under military rule; the north falling back into tribal wilderness. In a land where survival is the only measure of success, only one refuge, one fortress, it seems, stands against the darkness: far to the north, the hidden glen of Slaith.

But two survivors from the south struggle through to the hidden glen with news of other communities, other pockets of survival. And Patrick Given and Alison MacGuire must venture out into the wilderness at the head of a tiny expedition to make contact. The secrets they discover will change everything: a new hope, a new chance of survival; a new Jerusalem…

Out in the wilderness, Joseph Ackerman prowls the refugee camps and shattered towns, seeking nemesis; seeking the final dream of his lost love, ever on the verge of a violent death. While in the north, the billionaire, Thompson, begins to direct the last of his forces towards Slaith, and its destruction…

And in space, a brooding, enigmatic menace remains, possessed of unimaginable destructive power, and resisting all attempts at understanding.

When the scattered elements come together, there begins a final confrontation more devastating than anything that has gone before. One which could destroy the shattered land forever…

A cracking read for anyone interested in the apocalyptic genre...a very modern, authentic feel to it, both story and characters.

Startlingly good

I read this in one session, couldn't stop. Really good at describing and feeling the normality of life with an overlay of supernatural threat. You know that feeling that there's something going on that no one is admitting to and the world is going to fall apart? Here it does. I need the next installment.
